Dedicated to the performance and preservation of Traditional Dixieland Jazz in Austin and Central Texas

Austin Traditional Jazz Society

Board Meeting, May 10, 2008

House of Tom Straus

Members present: Tom Straus, Becky Maddox, Malcolm Rodman, Bill Padgett,

      Dave Stoddard, Dan Augustine

Tom called the meeting to order at 10:10 am.

In the absence of Recording Secretary Nancy-Jane Griffith, Dan Augustine volunteered to record the minutes of the meeting.

Treasurer's report: Malcolm distributed the ATJS Operating Statement as of May 5, 2008, and discussed the items.  Tom passed around the Paramount Theatre Program Book with our advertisement in it, and the cost for the ad was discussed.  It was asked if at the next concert we should give a discount for the last two concerts.  Bill proposed that if someone paid for a new membership at one of the last two concerts, the last concert(s) should be free.  No decision was reached on this proposal.  The treasurer's report was approved.

Committee report on corporate sponsorships: Bill had nothing to report.  Tom mentioned the Austin Community Foundation as a possible source of funding. Malcolm described Austin Pro Bono and Tom said that he would scan the flyer and send it as a PDF to the Board (which was done).

Next fiscal year's concerts: decide on bands and dates so the information can be included in our Playbill.  Dave and others talked about whether to have the bands play only two sets of an hour each, with the third hour devoted to guest musicians sitting in with the band.  He was against it.  Also discussed were ways to encourage young (highschool and college age) musicians.  Malcolm mentioned that at the Potomac River Jazz Club they had what they called 'shy' jams, for those inexperienced players to play at.  Dave volunteered to coordinate such an event if we decided to host one.  Dan suggested sending our email-messages about upcoming concerts also to all central Texas band directors (middle-school, high school, college).

Dave and Becky will come up with proposals for the bands and dates for next year, with eight concerts and one jam session, plus a March special concert.

New business: Becky asked if we should pay performing musicians more, especially a gas allowance for those from outside the Austin area.

Malcolm mentioned that ATJS Board elections will occur in September at an annual meeting.  Becky volunteered to take over Malcolm's duties in membership-ticket fulfillment (possibly with Nancy-Jane).

The next ATJS Board meeting was scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2008, 10:00 am, at the house of Nancy-Jane Griffith, 6105 Mesa Drive.

Tom adjourned the meeting at 11:30 am.

Repectfully submitted,

Dan Augustine, temporary Recording Secretary
