True to our mission statement, the Austin Traditional Jazz Society's 2006-07 season will match veteran jazz musicians with appreciative audiences. Each event promises to provide a memorable experience.

Our bandstand will showcase the talents of veteran local jazzmen and bands -- Chuck Reiley's Alamo City Jazz Band, Phil Armstrong's Crystal River Jazz Band, Tommy Griffith's New Orleans Jazz Band of Austin and the always-popular Band Aids Jazz Band.

Out of town guest musicians will include vocalist Carol McGiffin from Santa Fe, pianist Bob Pilsbury from Boston and reedman Bob Krenkel from Dallas.

Showcasing younger talent, we'll turn the bandstand on April 15 to Aunt Ruby's Sweet Jazz Babies. A relative newcomer to the Austin Jazz Scene, the band has established itself as solid entertainers in two short years.

The Babies are led by guitarist/vocalist Ed Hayes. Others are Ryan Gould on string bass, Oliver Steck on trumpet, Jon Doyle on clarinet and saxophone, and Joe Cordi on piano. Other local jazzmen often appear with the group.

The always popular jam session is scheduled for January 14th. Musicians wishing to participate will be instructed to register in advance, to assure a balanced program and the opportunity for all to participate.

Our music committee is working on a March Special Concert, which will be offered to members at a discounted price. We are working on ways and means to finance this event, and it is too early for commitments from out of town bands. But, we know what the membership wants and will strive to meet your desires.

Even with a dues increase -- our first in a decade -- your annual membership of $40.00 to attend seven events is a real bargain. Your renewal also will help insure that we'll be hearing live traditional jazz in Austin in the years to come.

Needed: Committee volunteers,Candidates for Board

Our seven member Board is severely overworked. The Society needs candidates to join the Board as well as volunteers to help with: fund raising; concert set-up, and newsletter and publicity writing. If you are willing to help out, let us know by e-mailing Treasurer Malcolm Rodman at mnbrodman@austin.rr.com or phone him at 795-9112.
